Chevet et mur nord romans - Romanesque chevet and north wall
L'église Notre-Dame d'Alluyes dans le département d'Eure-et-Loir, date des XIIème et XIIIème siècles. Elle a subi des modifications et a été agrandie au XVIème siècle. La porte et les baies du mur sud en sont de bons exemples.
The church dedicated to Our Lady at Alluyes, in the département of Eure-et-Loir, dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It underwent alterations and was enlarged in the 16th century. The south doorway and large pointed-arched windows are good examples of these late additions.

I) Le dit des trois morts et des trois vifs - The three dead and the three living:
After the Hundred Years War and the plagues of the 14th and 15th centuries, "memento mori" became commonplace: skulls, bones, paintings reminded people that was perhaps closer than they thought and that no one, however powerful and rich would be spared. The scene depicting the three dead and the three living meeting in a graveyard is characteristic.
Après la Guerre de Cent Ans et les pestes des XIVème et XVème siècles, les "memento mori" se multiplièrent: crânes, ossements, peintures rappelaient aux gens que la mort était peut-être plus proche qu'ils ne le pensaient et que personne, même puissant et riche n'y échapperait. Le dict des trois morts et de trois vifs est caractéristique.
Three young horsemen are hunting with their hawks. In a graveyard, they are stopped by three decomposing dead, who remind them of the brevity of life and of the importance of the salvation of their souls.
Trois jeunes cavaliers vont à la chasse avec leurs faucons. Dans un cimetière, ils sont arrêtés par trois morts en décomposition, qui leur rappellent la briéveté de la vie et l'importance du salut de leur âme.

Le premier mort porte une faucille et son corps est en partie caché par son suaire - The first dead is carrying a sickle and part of his body is concealed by his shroud.
Le deuxième mort tient une bêche et porte son suaire sur son bras gauche - The second dead is holding a spade and carrying his shroud on his left arm
The third dead is wearing a crown. He is holding a scythe and carrying his shroud on his left shoulder - Le troisième mort est couronné. Il tient une faux et porte son suaire sur l'épaule gauche
Les trois vifs - The three living
The third living is facing the dead and and is no longer holding the reins as his horse is rearing - Le troisième cavalier fait face aux morts et a lâché les rênes alors que son cheval se cabre
II) Le mur nord - The north wall:
Saint- Christophe et, à droite, Saint Jacques et la donatrice - Saint Christopher and, on the right, Saint James and the donatrix
Most of the pigments have disappeared from the figure of Saint Christopher, but below the surface of the river, the preparatory outlines of the saint's feet and of various fishes are wonderfully intact, revealing the skill of the artist.
La pigmentation a pratiquement disparu du personnage de Saint Christophe, mais sous la surface de la rivière, le tracé préparatoire des pieds du saint et de divers poissons est merveilleusement intact, révélant la maîtrise de l'artiste.
