L'abbaye de Clairmont fut fondée au XIIème siècle. Les seigneurs de Laval, qui souhaitaient la présence d'une abbaye cistercienne près de leur château, s'étaient adressés à Saint Bernard, abbé de Clairvaux en Bourgogne. Saint Bernard envoya un "essaim" de moines, dirigé par l'abbé Philippe et, en 1152, la nouvelle abbaye fut consacrée sous le nom de Notre-Dame de Clairmont.
The abbey of Clairmont was founded in the 12th century. The lords of Laval, wishing to have a Cistercian abbey near their castle, had appealed to St Bernard, abbot of Clairvaux in Burgundy. St Bernard sent a "swarm" of monks, headed by abbot Philippe and, in 1152, the new abbey was consecrated and named "Our Lady of Clairmont".

Les peintures murales sont très rares dans les églises cisterciennes car la règle interdisait toute décoration (sculpture, peinture) susceptible de distraire les moines de la contemplation de Dieu et de la prière. Les quelques peintures murales qui étaient tolérées ne devaient pas comporter de figuration humaine.
Wall paintings are extremely rare in Cistercian churches as the rule banned any form of decoration (sculpture, paintings) which might distract the monks from the contemplation of God and from prayer. The rare paintings that were allowed never represented human figures.
