L'abbaye de l'Epau fut fondée en 1229 par Bérengère de Navarre, veuve de Richard Coeur de Lion et contesse douairière du Maine. L'abbaye fut reconstruite au XIVème siècle à la suite d'un incendie et subit des modifications aux XVIIème et XVIIIème siècles. Bérengère y est enterrée.
The abbey of l'Epau was founded in 1229 by Berengara of Navarre, widow of Richard Coeur de Lion and countess dowager of Maine. The abbey was rebuilt in the 14th century after a fire and underwent a number of alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. Queen Berengara is buried in the abbey.

7) Scriptorium:
Les moines copistes travaillaient dans le scriptorium qui n'avait pas de cheminée et donc pas de chauffage. Lorsque le froid gelait l'encre, les moines la faisaient passer par un guichet dans la pièce voisine, le chauffoir, qui était avec la cuisine la seule pièce équipée d'une cheminée.
The copyist monks worked in the scriptorium, which had no fireplace and therefore no heating. When the cold froze the ink, the monks could use a wicket to transfer it to the adjacent room, the calefactory, which, with the kitchen, was the only room equipped with a fireplace.
