FONTEVRAUD ABBEY

The abbey of Fontevraud was founded in 1099 by Robert d'Arbrissel, a hermit who enjoyed the support of Pope Urban II. He decided that not only would nuns and monks  share the same abbey but also that an abbess would rule over men and women. Most monks, nuns and, of course, abbesses were members of the aristocracy. Fontevraud is closely associated with the Plantagenets. Henry II, king of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard I (Coeur de Lion) and Isabella of Angoulême, wife of king John (Lackland) are buried in the abbey.

L'abbaye de Fontevraud a été fondée en 1099 par Robert d'Arbrissel, un ermite qui avait l'appui du Pape Urbain II. Il décida que non seulement les moniales et les moines partageraient la même abbaye maisd aussi qu'une abbesse dirigerait les hommes et les femmes. La plupart des moines, des moniales et, bien sur des abbesses, étaient membres de l'aristocatie. Fontevraud est intimement associée aux Plantagenêts. Henri II, roi d'Angleterre, sa femme Aliénor d'Aquitaine, Richard I (Coeur de Lion) et Isabelle d'Angoulême, épouse de Jean (Sans Terre) reposent à Fontevraud.

Elles ont été exécutées au XVIème siècle par Thomas Pot, artiste angevin. Chaque scéne est accompagnée du portrait d'une ou plusieurs religieuses. Il s'agit souvent d'ajouts postérieurs aux peintures.

They were paintein the 16th century by Thomas Pot, an Angevin artist. Each scene is accompanied by the portait of one or several nuns. Most of these portraits are later additions.
