SAINT-SULPICE-DES-LANDES

(LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE)

L'église du Vieux-Bourg, près de Saint-Sulpice-des-Landes en Loire-Atlantique, date des XIVème et XVème siècles.  Le campanile en charpente a été reconstruit au XVIIème siècle. Les peintures murales datent du XVème siècle et ont été restaurées à la fin du XIXème siècle. Ces peintures ont probablement été exécutées par des moines et des religieuses des prieurés et couvents voisins (Melleray, Bonnoeuvre et Rochementru).

The church of the Vieux-Bourg, near Saint-Sulpice-des-Landes, in the département of Loire-Atlantique, dates to the 14th and 15th centuries. The bell tower was rebuilt in the 18th century. The wall paintings date to the 15th century and were restored in the late 19th century. They have probably been executed by the monks and nuns of the neighbouring priories and convents (Melleray, Bonnoeuvre and Rochementru).

LES PEINTURES MURALES - THE WALL PAINTINGS

Les peintures murales couvrent les murs et la voûte de la nef ainsi que l'abside, derrière le retable. Elles représentent un grand nombre de scènes dans un style parfois naïf. Elles ont été inspirées par la foi et sont un témoignage souvent plus émouvant que des oeuvres plus achevées.

The wall paintings cover the walls and vault of the nave as well as the apse, behind the retable. They represent a great number of scenes in a somewhat naive style. They were inspired by faith and are often more moving than more accomplished works.

I) MUR OUEST - WEST WALL:

L'enfer et ses démons - Hell and its demons

Roue de l'enfer entraînant les damnés - Damned souls tormented on a wheel

II) MUR NORD - NORTH WALL:

Un ange délivre Adam et Eve du Purgatoire - An angel delivers Adam and Eve from Purgatory

Saint Evêque portant une chasuble rouge et une mitre d'or. Il est debout devant un autel sur lequel est posé un calice d'or. Derrière lui, un servant agenouillé.

Adam et Eve avant la Chute - Adam and Eve before the Fall

Saint Chevalier en armure, auréolé d'or et portant lance et bouclier. Le personnage à sa gauche pourrait être Saint Vincent - A Knight Saint in armour, with a golden halo. He is carrying a spear and a shield. The figure on his left might be Saint Vincent.

III) MUR SUD - SOUTH WALL:

En partant du coin supérieur gauche et dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre: 1) la Cène 2) le lavement des pieds et les apôtres endormis au jardin de Gethsémani 3) La fuite en Egypte 4) le baptême. Clockwise from the top left hand corner: 1) the last supper 2) the washing of the disciples' feet and the apostles asleep in the garden of Gethsemane 3) the flight to Egypt 4) baptism scene.

IV) VOUTE DE LA NEF (nord) - VAULT OF THE NAVE (north):

Voûte de la nef, registre supérieur: les apparitions du Christ - registre inférieur: le Christ devant Caïphe - Vault of the nave, upper register: the post-resurrection appearances of Christ - lower register: Christ before Caiaphas.

Apparitions du Christ: 1) à sa mère 2) à Madeleine - Christ's appearances: 1) to his mother 2) to Magdalene

V) VOUTE DE LA NEF (sud) - VAULT OF THE NAVE (south):

Registre supérieur: la Pentecôte, registre inférieur: le portement de croix - Upper register: Pentecost, lower register: the bearing of the Cross.
