Charné est un nom celtique signifiant "pierre sacrée". L'église a été construite au XIIème siècle, sur le site d'un oratoire du VIème siècle dédié à la Vierge. En 1687, une nouvelle église est érigée à Ernée et Charné perd son rôle d'église paroissiale. Sa nef fut détruite à la fin du XVIIème siècle et l'édifice actuel est le transept et le choeur de l'ancienne église. Le culte de Notre-Dame de Charné, qui à souvent protègé les habitants d'épidémies et de catastrophes continue de nos jours.
Charné is a Celtic name meaning "sacred stone". The church was built in the 12th century, on the site of a 6th-century oratory dedicated to the Virgin. In 1687, a new church was erected at Ernée and Charné ceased to be a functioning parish church. Its nave was destroyed in the late 17th century and the present edifice is the transept and choir of the former church. Our Lady of Charné, who has often protected the inhabitants of Charné against epidemics and natural disasters, is still worshipped nowadays.

Elles recouvrent les murs de la chapelle de Notre-Dame de Charné (bras nord du transept) et sont très peu lisibles. Elles datent du XVème siècle.
They decorate the walls of Our Lady of Charné's chapel (north arm of the transept) and are now hardly legible. They date from the 15th century.
